It is said that the mushrooms are being used as food from 3000 B.C.
The Greeks and Romans described mushroom as ' food for god ' .
The cultivation of mushroom started from 18th century in France. WHO(world health organization) says that some mushrooms can be used as nutritious food for human consumption.
Importance of mushroom in human health
a. Mushroom as source of proteins
Mushroom contain very high amount of protein which ranges its value very high. The protein
content in mushroom is 19 - 35% which is higher than chicken (18 - 20 % ), rice 7.3 % , wheat 12.7 %
and many more.
b. Mushroom as source of vitamins
There are different types of vitamins present in mushroom some of them are vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
,Pantothenic acid , thiamine (B1), biotin, Polate , niacin , vitamin B12 and vitamin D. The fibers of
mushroom helps to reduce cholesterol. It is important for the digestive system . Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium.
c. Mushroom as source of minerals
Mushrooms are rich in important minerals such as sodium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium and selenium. Copper helps in absorbing oxygen and creating red blood cells ; potassium regulates the blood pressure and helps the function of cells properly. Selenium acts as an antioxidant to prevent cells damage which reduces the risk of cancer and other diseases.
Mushrooms are used for different reasons but the use of mushroom as medicine is good .
